Matthew Damien Schutz, age 22, of Roswell, GA, passed away on February 22, 2024. He was born on August 22, 2001 to James Schutz and Joselyn Hoffman Schutz. Matthew grew up in Johns Creek and Roswell with his five siblings.
Matthew was a natural leader who exuded confidence, competence, and dependability. As a scout, Matthew attained the coveted rank of Eagle Scout and he served as the troop’s Senior Patrol Leader, earning praise from adult leaders for his maturity, and emulation from younger scouts for whom he was an admired mentor.
Matthew loved the outdoors. On scouting and family trips around the country, he was at home camping and hiking, horseback riding and sailing. During those many cozy family trips with 8 people and camping gear stuffed into a minivan, Matthew visited 46 states, Canada, and most recently Puerto Rico, and spent a week on a horseback wilderness trek with his father at the great Philmont Scouting Reserve.
Matthew was also a tremendous wake and snow boarder. Matthew and his family spent years of summer weekends at the family lake house on Lake Hartwell and enjoyed many ski trips to Park City, Utah. Less than a month ago, Matthew enjoyed the best powder runs of his life on Jupiter Peak, one of his favorite double diamond runs, with his parents, siblings, and cousins.
Matthew was a natural mechanic. From removing his own training wheels without any assistance as a young boy to restoring cars and motorcycles as an adult, Matthew was innately gifted with tools, vehicles, and rapid and insightful problem solving. He further honed his creative production skills in his career with Trellis, an agricultural technology start-up, where he started as a part-time employee during high school and at the early age of 18 was promoted to head of manufacturing.
Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, V. James Schutz, Jr. He is survived by his parents Jim and Joselyn Schutz; siblings Kiersten (Andrew Renuart), Anthony, John Paul, Anna, and Oliver; nephew Benedict Renuart; paternal grandmother Marjorie Schutz; maternal grandparents Paul and Ann Hoffman; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Matthew’s funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 28th at St. Brigid Catholic Church (3400 Old Alabama Rd, Johns Creek, GA 30022), followed by a reception. Burial will follow at Honey Creek Woodlands at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit (2625 Highway 212 SW, Conyers, GA 30094).
The family will also host a vigil service Tuesday, February 27th from 6 - 9 pm at the church. It will consist of a rosary followed by an opportunity for tributes.
Honey Creek Woodlands is a conservation burial ground requiring natural materials. Matthew’s Boy Scout Troop 7153 is building Matthew’s casket.
