14, 2012, following a long illness. He was 76 years of age. Neal was born on September
1, 1936, in Greenville, South Carolina, and was the elder son of Neal Clark, Sr., and
Virginia Newberry Clark. Shortly after his birth the family moved to the Atlanta area where
he lived for the rest of his life. Neal was a 1954 graduate of Decatur High School and
earned a BS in business administration from Emory University in 1958. During his college
years, he was an active member of the US Navy Reserve and SAE fraternity, which
generated friendships that lasted throughout his life.
Neal would tell you that he was defined by his music. Early in his childhood, he showed
talent, and over many years of instruction and practice, he became a very accomplished pianist
and organist. While still a young man, he often played in area churches and commercial
establishments. Neal's love of music was a lifelong joy for him and for his family and
many friends.
Another passion was boats. His inventory of watercraft bought and sold over the years includes a canoe, a cabin cruiser, several fishing and ski boats, a Naval ship, a house boat, and presently, an outboard runabout at a winter home in Savannah. Time permitting, on any summer day, a likely place to find Neal would be afloat (with refreshments and friends) on a nearby body of water. To him, that would be a perfect day.
In his professional life, Neal worked for several commercial real estate firms before founding
Clark & Co. Over the years, he participated in a number of real estate development and sales
projects including shopping centers, condominiums, and residential and vacation homes.
One of his most successful enterprises was the establishment of Mr. C's Pub and
Restaurant, which is still in operation under the same name at the same location over forty
years later. Another long-lived business he created is USA Storage Center, founded in
1987, which he owned and managed with his partners until his recent illness.
However, more than his virtuosity or his enthusiasms or his business acumen, Neal's family
and friends will most remember his caring and compassionate nature. Perhaps because he
had endured so many health issues of his own, he could sympathize with friends who were
confronting health or emotional problems. He was especially faithful in visiting friends in the
hospital or who were confined to home while recuperating. Neal was a great friend in good
times and bad, and he will be sorely missed by his extended family and his friends, many
of whom have known him since high school and college days.
He was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Ralph Hayes Clark.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Winifred Stockard Clark, and by his sons
by marriage, William Lee Horton (Charissa) and Robert Stockard Horton (Naomi), and by
grandsons Marshall, Peter, and Whitman and granddaughters Kate, Maesa, and Suzanne.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 22nd at 2:00pm in the Chapel at
Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, 2715 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30305.
