Born in Etowah, Tennessee, to Cecile Buice Cosby and Henry Cartledge Cosby in 1930, Rachel lived in Atlanta from the time she was a small child, and kept up with a number of friends from Girls’ High. Rachel studied art under Lamar Dodd at The University of Georgia in the early 1950s. She developed a fond loyalty to the school, and later served as a trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation for many years. She was married to Travis Burns Stewart from 1953 until the late sixties.
Rachel is still remembered as “one of the city’s most glamorous fashion models” of the nineteen-sixties, as she was described by Yolande Gwin of the Atlanta Journal. Ms. Conway purchased House Parts, Inc., in 1983, and worked there with great delight and energy amongst many devoted employees until damn near the day she died.
Rachel is survived by her two daughters, Rebekah Cosby Stewart and Renée Cecile Stewart; two granddaughters, Sarah Drysdale Broadwater and Rebekah Wilder Drysdale; and one great-granddaughter, Evelyn James Broadwater.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 1st, at 3:00 PM at H.M. Patterson and Son's Spring Hill Chapel. Family and friends are welcome for visitation beforehand, at 2:00 PM. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, friends make a contribution to the organization of their choice, or help someone in need.
