Born on April 9, 1938, in Waynesboro, Virginia, Richard was the beloved son of Margaret and Richard Jesser, and brother to William A. Jesser, who remained a lifelong friend and confidant. Richard was a distinguished graduate of Waynesboro High School, where he excelled in science and served as drum major of the marching band, earning recognition for his unique and lively performance style, affectionately
known as the “turkey trot.” He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia, graduating alongside his mother, who received her degree in Education. Richard furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and later returned to the University of Virginia to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry.
Richard had a notable career as a manager in the analytical division at Perkin-Elmer, where he became renowned for his expertise as a troubleshooter for mass spectrometers. He was a compassionate and generous individual, often prioritizing the needs of others above his own. As a testament to his character, Richard chose to resign rather than lay off team members during difficult organizational decisions.
Richard’s first marriage to Teresa resulted in two children, Richard (known as Rick) and Lara. Upholding family tradition, Rick also married a Margaret, and together they raised four children: Jennifer, Robert, Kimberly, and Thomas. Rick later married Romina, the mother of their daughter Lara, who is named in honor of his sister, who has three sons: Evans, Jacob, and William.
Richard had numerous great-grandchildren and was proud to be recognized at Helen’s Catholic church for having the largest family among its congregation. An avid computer gamer, he was featured in a gaming magazine and inspired his brother to pursue a passion for gaming as well. While Richard was not an enthusiastic traveler, he cherished the memories made during several cruises with Helen.
There will be no public service held in Atlanta; however, a private scattering of ashes will take place in his hometown of Waynesboro, Virginia, honoring his cherished memories.
