Ruth Elder Vaught, affectionally known as “Old Woman”, age 88 of Atlanta passed away peacefully in her home on November 8, 2016. Ruth received her Bachelors Degree from Oglethorpe University and her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University. “Miss Ruth” was the Director of The Lovett Preschool for over 25 years. While at Lovett, Ruth made a difference in numerous children’s and parent’s lives. She devoted her life to The Cathedral of St. Philip and was honored to serve as Junior and Senior Warden. She was a Lay Eucharist Minister and for decades she organized and furnished much of the food for receptions after funerals, celebrations, ordinations, Elder Ministry occasions, confirmations, The Antique Show Tea Room, Friends of Cathedral Music Events, the Homeless Requiem and Habitat for Humanity. Ruth was also an active member of St. Veronica’s Guild and a Daughter of The King. Ruth had a life long love for Opera and volunteered her time with The Atlanta Opera.
Ruth was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Ruth is survived by her children Marjorie Elder Vaught, Ellen Vaught Brown, James Brown Vaught, Jr. and his wife Karen Winters Vaught, and grandchildren Ruth Brown Agee and her husband Corey Tyler Agee, James Brown Vaught, III, and Charles William Winters Vaught, and her beloved caregiver Kori Smith.
A graveside service will be held Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11 o’clock at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please make donations to The Cathedral of St. Philip. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
