Sue “Susu” Cockrill was born in Roanoke to Francis and Ruth Kelly on July 23, 1944. She married Doug Cockrill on November 26, 1964, at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. With the birth of her grandchildren, Susu stepped into her most cherished role as “Yaya.” When she wasn’t creating beautiful artwork and handmade gifts in her studio, she was often found in her community, enjoying classes and coffee with her YMCA ladies, participating in lively book clubs, traveling near and far with her dearest friends, or tending to her adoring dog, Bandit.
Susu is survived by Randy Cockrill and Jennifer Stalkup Cockrill son and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Cockrill daughter, Elizabeth Kelly niece, Larry and Miriam Kelly nephew and wife, Eve Cockrill Vanzant and Ben Cockrill niece and nephew, Heath and Sandy Clift cousin, Caroline and Jim Dismukes sister and brother-in-law, Donald A. Cockrill brother-in law, and her grandchildren Annie Reid Hagearty 20, William Randall Cockrill 18, Kelly Teagan Hagearty 18, and Emily Alexandra Cockrill 14.
The Cockrill family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Jolly, Northside Hospital, The Blazers Class and members of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, her close neighbors, and the lifelong friends she cherished for all the help and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Susu may be directed to the Cowart Family YMCA on Ashford Dunwoody Road where Susu delighted in her friends and community daily.
A Celebration of Life for Sue will be held on April 11th at 3:00 PM at the Dunwoody Nature Center, located at 5343 Roberts Dr., Dunwoody, GA 30338. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor their memory in this beautiful, natural setting.
