Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1946, Tom moved with his family to Atlanta in 1952. He grew up in DeKalb County, attending Our Lady of the Assumption School before graduating from Marist School in 1964. He was a graduate of St. Louis University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, before serving in the Vietnam War as a Staff Sergeant in the 25th Infantry of the United States Army. He was awarded two Bronze Stars with "V" devices for valor, a testament to his bravery and composure during combat. He also earned a National Service Defense Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and an Army Commendation Medal. Tom carried his warrior and military mindset and the memories of those lost with him throughout his entire adult life.
Tom possessed a deep intellect and a quick wit. He had an innate ability to understand people and ideas, which made him a natural entrepreneur. A pioneer in promotional and internet marketing, he built a career shaping brands and bringing products and promotions to life. He was the Founder and CEO of multiple successful promotional marketing agencies, and held many US and international patents, always thinking ahead, always refining. He worked and consulted with some of the largest brands in the world.
He also had a way with words—whether in business, conversation, or storytelling—that made people lean in and listen. He was as entertaining as he was insightful, turning even the most mundane moments into something memorable. A truly passionate Atlanta sports fan, he shared a deep love for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Atlanta Braves, Falcons, and Hawks, seldom missing an inning, quarter, or game.
Above all, Tom loved his family. He and his wife, Sharon (Allison), shared a lifetime of love and laughter. Most recently spending time together on many trips or at the family home on Lake Glenville, North Carolina. He was endlessly proud of his three sons and blessed with exceptional daughters-in-law —Thomas III (Kristy), Michael (Caitlin), and Bobby (Regina)—and his five grandchildren, Reid Callaway (7), Louise Allison (5), James Webb (5), Mary Michael (3), and Robert Christopher Jr. (3 months), who will grow up hearing stories of his wit, wisdom, and warmth.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Joan and Thomas Barnhart, a pharmacist, as well as his brother, Robert. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Jo Means (Al), Barbara Emberson (married to Steve, who has since passed), Ann Crane (married to Tom, who has since passed), and many nieces and nephews.
Tom’s legacy is one of intelligence, curiosity, unfiltered humor, and innovation. He leaves behind a family who adored him, friends who admired him, and ideas that will continue to inspire.
A celebration of his life will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Brookhaven, Georgia on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow at the residence of Thomas and Kristy Barnhart. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Marist School or the Veterans charity of your choice.
