With profound love and tenderness, we (the family) share the news of Thomasine Melvene Macon (“Tommie”), born January 8th, 1948. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, mother Evelyn Dorothy Macon and her father Thomas Melvin Macon of Washington DC. Tommie was embraced by the Lord's loving arms on May 15th at 1:21 PM at the young age of 77 years. Tommie's beautiful spirit peacefully ascended to heaven while surrounded by gentle care at the AccentCare Inpatient Hospice Center in Cummings, Georgia.
Tommie spent her formative years in Washington DC, embracing all that life had to offer her. Following her graduation from Roosevelt Senior High School, she pursued higher education at Federal City College (now the University of the District of Columbia).
Driven by her spirit and desire for new experiences, Tommie enlisted in the United States Army, where she served honorably for three years. Upon completion of her military service, she transitioned to a civil service career with the federal government, joining the Office of Health and Human Services Head Start Program. After several years of dedicated service, the agency relocated its operations to Atlanta, Georgia. Our free spirit Tommie embraced the opportunity and relocated to Atlanta where she continued the work enhancing child development and family support services until her retirement.
Living in a household filled with joy and affection, music played a central role in Tommie’s daily life. Tommie was particularly drawn to a variety of music genres such as gospel, jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, and popular show tunes. She enjoyed singing to the music playing on the record player and radio. Tommie's passion for music grew stronger over time. She was fascinated by jazz's distinctive rhythmic patterns and vibrant instrumental expressions. Music became a passion that led to the start of her singing career. In Atlanta, she did voice-over commercials for local businesses and radio, performed at weddings, birthday celebrations, and family reunions. Known for her velvety smooth voice and a touch of sassiness and sophistication, Tommie's talent shined brightly. During a cruise, Tommie participated in a talent contest and emerged as the first-place winner and received the customary bottle of wine. She was also offered an opportunity to work on the cruise as an entertainer but chose not to accept the job in order to focus on other endeavors.
Tommie was the lead vocalist of Tommie Macon and The Gentle Men of Jazz. Although Jazz is their mainstream and choice of music, the group performs multiple genres of music from blues, R&B, country, easy listening, swing, and folk music. Over the past 30+ years, band members have come and gone but the band has remained true to its jazz identity and is a solid music force in the Atlanta jazz scene. The range of knowledge in music within this group is so enormous that the group takes request with no limitations and will produce a quality sound to satisfy its audience.
In addition to being a songstress and bandleader, Tommie expanded her artistic contributions as writer and co-director of the musical production "Where The Good Songs Go." As a commitment to arts education Tommie taught courses such as "Stage Presence” and other course trainings. She demonstrated remarkable dedication to nurture new talent by introducing them into her jazz world and inviting them sing on stage during her sets.
Tommie was active in several community organizations, notably the "Divas with a Cause," a collective of accomplished female vocalists who collaborate on fundraising initiatives that support various nonprofit charitable organizations.
Lastly, Tommie embraced life's joys with the same passion she brought to her work. Her adventurous heart found delight in traveling, whether cruising with loved ones, exploring countries and sightseeing, or weekend road trips with the girls to a casino. She treasured live music, especially performances by her beloved Johnny Mathis, "the voice of romance." After triumphantly defeating her first cancer diagnosis—marked by the ceremonial ringing of the bell—our dear Tommie fulfilled her heartfelt wish to explore the world, journeying with family across Spain, Italy, France, Turkey, and Greece, to create precious memories in each destination.
Our precious Tommie has answered heaven's sweetest call, gently releasing her earthly journey to embrace the promise of forever. In this sacred transition, she has exchanged her temporary dwelling for an eternal home, claiming the magnificent gift promised through Christ's ultimate sacrifice and triumphant resurrection. Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find comfort knowing her spirit now soars free of pain, wrapped in perfect peace and endless light. Tommie's life continues—not ended, but beautifully transformed—inspiring us to live with the same courage, grace and love she so beautifully embodied. The imprint of her love will continue forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
Left to cherish her precious memories is her brother Ralph Davis Sr.; sister-law Minnie Daivs; Nephew Ralph Davis Jr.; wife Dr. Constance Davis; Niece Veronica “Ronnie” Davis; Grand Nephew Tyler Davis; and Grand Niece Justice Davis along with a host of very dear family and friends.
