William Albert (Bill) Haas of Dunwoody, Georgia passed away peacefully on June 4, 2022 surrounded by family. Born in Toledo, Ohio on February 16, 1937 to the late Walter and Mildred Haas, Bill grew up in Willoughby, a suburb of Cleveland and was one of six children, including identical twin brother Bob. Bill enjoyed playing many sports, especially basketball, while at St. Joseph High School. It was in Willoughby where he met the love of his life Betty Ann, and they were married in 1958. He attended nearby John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio where he earned a Bachelor of Science in History and Marketing.
In 1969, Bill began a long and rewarding career with the National Steel Corporation. He quickly ascended through several leadership positions of increasing responsibility that took him and Betty Ann and their growing family to several locations including Fullerton, California, Duxbury, Massachusetts, and Mendham, New Jersey. While at National Steel, Bill completed Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program and in 1980 he was named president of National Steel Service Center Inc., a position he held until his retirement.
Upon retirement in 1988, Bill and Betty Ann moved permanently to their beloved Hilton Head Island, where they had vacationed with family for many years. Although he enjoyed golf, fishing and boating, Bill’s true passion was using his financial acumen to help others. After moving to Hilton Head, Bill’s broad insight and heart for showing others how to manage their money led him to become a financial adviser with Melhado Flynn and Associates. After retiring from Melhado Flynn, he continued his daily market research and provided investment advice to friends and family up until his last days.
Bill had a great sense of humor and always captivated friends and family with his animated storytelling. He will always be remembered for his warm personality and generous spirit as he always put the needs of others ahead of his own.
Bill and Betty Ann relocated to Dunwoody in 2017 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Ann; his three children, Bill Haas (Cathy); Jane Widner (Cofield); and Steve Haas (Amy); and nine grandchildren: Christina Haas, Sam Haas, Ben Haas, Olivia Haas, Drew Widner (Blair), Jack Widner, Jordan Haas, Charlie Haas, and Ethan Haas.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either St. Vincent DePaul Society or to your favorite charity.
A funeral mass is planned for June 24, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mount Vernon Road in Dunwoody, Georgia.
