Herbert H. McClendon, born June 14, 1929, was raised in Etowah County and graduated from Etowah High School. Herbert married Betty Copeland, became a US Army member, and was a proud veteran who served in Korea. He attended the University of Alabama and became a businessman, selling building supplies for many years. After several years Herb and Betty became owners of McClendon Supply in Steele, AL until they retired.
Herbert’s hobbies included raising truckloads of food from his garden each year, Alabama football, and watching his children and grandchildren grow up. Herb was a longtime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Gallant. He served many years as a deacon. Herbert sang many years of Southern Gospel music, most as a member of the Songsters quartet, and his bass singing was enjoyed by many.
He was preceded in death by parents Bruce and Uldine McClendon, sisters Nora and Louise, brother Billy, and his loving wife of over 70 years, Betty. A very merciful Savior chose to call them both home on the same day, only twelve hours apart.
Herbert is survived by daughter Lisa (Mike) Elders, sons Mike (Sandy) McClendon, Phil McClendon, and Ronnie (Jennifer) McClendon, as well as his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their extended families. Grandchildren include Niki McClendon Bane, Heather McClendon Colvard, Ryan McClendon, Rebekah Elders, Jesse Elders, and Jordan Elders.
Joint service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Gallant, AL on Wednesday, February 2nd. Visitation from 10:00 to 12:00, with funeral beginning at 12:00. Burial at the church following the service. Services conducted by Bro. Clay Spears and Rev. Donald McClendon. Flowers accepted or donations may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery Fund.
Pallbearers will be Ryan McClendon, Jesse Elders, Tim McClendon, Jim Mays, Jerry Reeves, Stanley Gilliland, Michael Colvard, and Don Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be all past and present deacons of Bethlehem Baptist, all members of McClendon Supply softball teams and special friend, Jimmy Harrison.
