

Poppa was born in Ft. Payne, Alabama to Eugene and Myrtle Gilbreath on June 5th, 1937.
After graduation from Gadsden High School, Poppa joined the U.S. Army reserve and was a proud veteran. Poppa was a graduate of Jacksonville State University where he obtained a teaching degree. Instead of teaching, he landed a job at Republic Steel where he retired.
He was a devoted husband and Poppa.
Poppa loved his grandkids and his church family with all his heart. He loved to talk and tell stories , sing in the choir and piddle with his clocks.
Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Faye Wain Gilbreath. Parents: Eugene and Myrtle Gilbreath. Brother : Ray Gilbreath.
Survived by: His only child Darren Kent Gilbreath (Amy)
Brother : Terry Gilbreath of Suwannee, Georgia.
Grandkids : McCain (Abby) Gilbreath, McCartney and Mabrey Gilbreath.
Pallbearers: McCain Gilbreath, Bryan Cash, Dave Wain, Jerry Ware, Jeff Hilburn.
Honorary Pallbearers: Terry Gilbreath, Mike Gilbreath, Tracy Gilbreath.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church.
A Graveside service will be held at Rainbow Memorial Gardens at 2:00 pm on Wednesday April 22, 2026.
