Andrea Roberta Young, of Auburn, California passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Andrea Roberta Young (“Andy”) passed suddenly on July 6, 2022, but we hope these simple words let all know how wonderful a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister she was. Born on August 10, 1956 in Saudi Arabia to Robert and Rhona Messinger at Aramco’s oil compound in Dhahran, she grew up with her brothers Ross and Ray; loving the desert and wildlife around her. After completing high school at TASIS in Switzerland, she travelled to California where she graduated with honors from U.C. Davis in physiology and then finished her master’s in public health from UCLA. After college, she volunteered in the Peace Corps, serving in the Ministry of Health’s Western Province Health Office in Lautoka. While working in Fiji, she met her future husband Mark. When both finished their service, they settled in the Seattle area where they had their three children: daughter Janeva, and sons Rowan and Skyler. Work had them move to Tucson, AZ and then to Auburn, CA, where they bought 7.5 acres in the rural part of Placer County and raised farm animals. They designed their dream home and have been adding their finishing touches for the last 15+ years. Andrea was a 4-H leader for pygmy goats, home-schooled the two boys for several years and ran the homestead; over the last two+ decades taking care of horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits, cattle, swine, bees and lots and lots of goats. She raised silky terriers and was forever curious and intellectually delighted to learn new things about nature. Throughout her life, Andrea loved gardening, walking along nature trails, cooking new foods, planning travel excursions, playing tennis, feeding the hummingbirds, growing her roses, reading short stories, going to garage sales, taking the grandkids exploring in our woodland and pastures, and challenging us to be our best. Her mother, brothers, husband, children and grandchildren are deeply missing the joy, creativity and laughter that she unselfishly gave to us. As the family will only have a small home gathering, for those who wish to honor her memory, we ask that you please donate in her name to the Placer Land Trust.
