April 18th, 1938 - February 14th, 2025
David L. Smith, beloved husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, passed away peacefully at home on
February 14th at the age of 86. Surrounded by his family, David left this world in the comfort of his
home, leaving behind a legacy of strength and cherished memories.
David met his beloved wife, Marva, at a young age, and shared 67 wonderful years together, building a
life filled with love and countless travel adventures. Marva passed away five months prior on Sept. 14th
2024, and now they are reunited once more.
A devoted family man and hardworking businessman, David managed Safeway stores throughout
Northern California before owning the Pilot Hill Market, Coloma Gas Station, and Auburn Laundromat.
In retirement, he and Marva traveled to all 50 states.
David ensured the family’s adventures were safe, driving them across California to national parks, caves,
ghost towns, and beaches. He shared his love for Western movies with classics like Lonesome Dove and
True Grit. Summers were spent camping at KOAs, where Grandpa bought a 20-person tent and taught his
grandkids card games like solitaire and 31.
David had a passion for classic cars, with his favorite being an Oldsmobile Rocket 88. He never missed
Hot August Nights. He was an avid boater and fisherman, his favorite being his small fishing boat that
conquered both lakes and oceans. He cherished his time in Alaska and often spoke of returning for more
deep-sea fishing. A true seafood lover, oysters were always his favorite.
At home, David loved driving his golf cart around his property, stopping to admire the scenery or chat
with his grandkids. A family tradition he held dear was saying, “See ya later, alligator!”—a phrase his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren always answered with, “After while, crocodile!”
David is survived by his children: Lori (Mike), Jeff (Jonelle), and Denny (Sherry). He was a proud
grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of five. His family will forever cherish his wisdom, kindness,
and unwavering love.
A private celebration of life will be held on February 24th in Auburn, Ca.
