Life long resident of Auburn, born at Highland Hospital to proud and loving parents Don and Lillian Castle, Don peacefully passed away on the morning of January 29 after a long battle with heart and lung disease.
Growing up in Auburn, Don attended various grade schools as well as E.V. Cain Middle School, Placer Union High, and Sierra College. He started a career with PG & E where he worked as a lineman and inspector just before retirement in 2001.
Don had many hobbies and was very artistic. He liked gardening, cooking, woodworking, fishing, dining out, going to Denio's flea markets. But most of all, he loved flying. Shortly after his retirement from PG & E, Don decided to try for his pilot's license again which he had let lapse back in 1975. He got his license, bought a plane, rented a hangar and the Auburn Airport became his second home.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald L. Castle Sr. and Lillian W. Castle. He is survived by his domestic partner of 33 years Donna Lind. His son Bryan Castle, grandchildren, Brittany Castle, Joshua Castle (Hannah), and Chloe Castle as well as many close friends and extended family.
Don was a man with a big heart always willing to help a friend in any way he could. He will be dearly missed. There was no one else quite like him. He was truly one of a kind.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wings Grill and Espresso Bar at the Auburn Airport on March 28 from 3-5 PM for any and all who knew Donald and would like to share a memory or two.
Restaurants will be closed but will provide snacks, salads, and drinks.
