Ivan Lavern Hubbard was born April 18, 1923 to Iva Marie (Sleeman) and her husband Norman Wilmer Hubbard at the home of her parents, Thomas and Oceana Charity (Kyler) Sleeman which was located on their ranch south of Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA. Vern, as he was called, grew up in Auburn in what was known as “Hubbardville.” He worked on the ranches and picked fruit at his paternal grandparents’ home, Ernest William and Hattie May (Smith) Hubbard. Vern attended Columbia School, a one room grammar school in North Auburn, thru the 8th grade, and graduated from Placer High School in 1941.
On February 20, 1942, Vern married Marie Belle Campbell, the daughter of William Harvey and Lillian Marie (Palmer) Campbell of Penryn, CA. They shared 73 wonderful years together. Vern was employed by the U.S. Air Force at McClellan Field near Sacramento, CA for over 30 years. He was able to retire in 1975 at 52 years of age and enjoy country living and doing the things he loved doing best—hunting, fishing, camping, riding his motorcycles, working on his cars, and visiting with family and friends. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, stationed not only in the U.S. but in Okinawa as well. As a civilian, he worked on many airplanes, but on one noteworthy project he was a member of the crew who prepared the B25 bombers that Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle commanded and that bombed Hiroshima in Japan which brought WWII to an end. He was honorably discharged at Camp Beal on April 7, 1946.
Vern, a loving and kind husband and father, is survived by his wife, Marie, of Auburn, CA; two daughters, Gloria Gale Knight (Michael Lawrence) of Willits, CA and Carol Rosan Carlson (Donald Allison) of Applegate, CA; four grandchildren, Blaine Carlton Aud of Roseville, CA, Blair Kimberly Aud of Granite Bay, CA, Becky Belinda Donahoo (Chet Douglas) of Willits, CA, and Amanda Marie Carlson of Temecula, CA; three great-grandchildren, Brandie Sharise Rankin of Santa Cruz, CA, Reis Jordan Rankin of Chico, CA, and Don Douglas Donahoo of Willits, CA. After a courageous battle with cancer, Vern passed away early Saturday morning November 21, 2015 at his home on Bell Road in North Auburn. At his request there will be no formal chapel funeral service. Instead, there will be a graveside service held on Friday, December 18 at 1:00 p.m. at New Auburn Cemetery. It will be casual and Vern requested that his family and friends come wearing what he was most comfortable wearing—blue jeans.
