May 24, 1930 – October 17,2024
Susana Torres Ponce is survived by six of her seven children: daughter Gloria (Duane), son Fernando, daughter Ruby (Bob), son Jesse (Martha), daughter Rita, and son Andrew (Amy), five grandchildren: John (Sarah), Ramona (John), Shane (Samantha), Michelle and Louis, three great grandchildren: Ciana (Marcos), Weston, Rowan, a great, great grandson Franco, and a sister, Margarita Equia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Ponce, her oldest son, Jose Luis, sisters Julieta and Isabela and a brother Antonio.
Susana was born in Herndon, California, Fresno County. When she was two and she was sent to live with her beloved Tia Ramona Torres de Martinez and Abuela Mariana Manuela Olague de Torres in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. Three years later the family moved to Juarez, Mexico, where she spent most of her early years. As a young adult, Susana reclaimed her U.S. citizenship and worked at the historic Hotel Cortez in San Jacinto Plaza, El Paso, TX, where she met her husband-to-be, Jesus Ponce, an enlisted man in the U.S. Air Force. They were wed in Las Cruces, NM.
Susana and Jesus spent twenty-three years traveling the globe on behalf of the US Air Force. They retired from military life and settled in North Highlands, CA, in 1970. In 1975 they moved to Penryn, CA, in the Sierra Foothills, where they set up a small ranch and lived the remainder of their years.
After raising her children, Susana became a certified translator and interpreter for the Placer County Public Health Department and Alta California Regional Center. In both jobs she worked as a translator for home visiting nurses and assisted families during doctor visits.
Susana used to say, “Life has its ups and downs, but all in all, I’m a happy person.” As she neared the end of her life she often said, “I’m going to enjoy every day God gives me”. And that is exactly what she did.
Susana was much loved by her many friends and family and will be sorely missed.
