Sybil Edith Wickware Mahon was born, October 2, 1933, to Elmer David Wickware and Josie Armantha Allen Huddleston Wickware. Sybil was blessed with the brilliance and determined ambition of her father and the strength and sense of poise of her devoted mother Josie. She grew up with three siblings; Sylvia Wickware Muse, Argle Wickware and David Wickware.
Sybil and her family followed the depression era migration from the great state of Texas to sunny California. There the ingenuity and fortitude of her parents led them to an admirable standard of living. Doing their part for the family, Sybil and her siblings completed their education with honor.
Sybil embarked on her adult life as a wife and a devoted mother of three: David Jeffrey Drury; Jodie J. Drury Roznos and Elaine J. Drury Kelly. True to her ambitious nature she simultaneously managed her family while dedicating herself to a successful career with the Pacific Bell Telephone Company.
The happiest chapter in Sybil’s life was to begin in 1969 when she married her soulmate, Richard R. Mahon. With their mutual love and devotion they conscientiously brought about a blending of their two families. Sybil gracefully embraced Richard’s children; Sylvia Mahon Tuttle, Robert Mahon and Christine Mahon Leonard. They in turn appreciated her role as a caring and empathetic listener.
Sybil admired impressionist art; most specifically Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir. She was a lady of sophistication yet loved the fun of stepping into an elegant purple dress wrapped in a red feathered boa topped by a stylish red hat. This, along with the camaraderie of her fellow Red Hat Society sisters, always brought a giggle and a smile to her face.
Sybil was very generous with her time and dedication. This was evident in the many years of service she faithfully donated to the Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital.
Sybil’s life was full and she was content until Richard preceded her in death earlier this year. True to her nature she stood strong and proud, yet she missed him deeply.
While we are all saddened that she has left us, we find comfort in knowing that she is again with her life’s love…most likely with a diet coke in one hand and some chocolate in the other.
Sybil’s legacy lives on within her six surviving children; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. When we miss her, we simply need to look within ourselves or perhaps embrace one another.
Thank you Mom for all you have done. Please rest in peace knowing we are filled with your courage and love and we carry your legacy with honor.
