

James L. Pounder, 92, passed away of natural causes August 21, 2014. He was born Dec. 31, 1921, to Richard and Goldia Pounder in Grand Island, Nebraska. Moving to Wheatland, Wyoming he graduated high school in 1939. He accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Wyoming where one of his teammates was the late sportscaster, Curt Gowdy. Side-note, the Wyoming Cowboys won the 1943 NCAA Basketball Championship.
Drafted in early 1942, he joined the 572nd Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion as a spotter in Africa and Europe. After WWII he attended WSU where he met and married Bonnibelle Cripe in 1948. Getting his B.S. in agriculture/education, he did his graduate work at Yale University and obtained his masters in Chemistry at UCLA. He taught high school at Cle Elum, Ephrata and finally 30 years at Auburn High. He loved golf, was the past president of the Auburn Men’s Club and was Golf Coach for many years at Auburn High. After retirement, they moved to Anderson Island, WA where he enjoyed repairing golf clubs, gardening, carpentry and travel.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, brothers John Doyle Pounder, Raymond H. Pounder and grandson Brian P. Pounder. He is survived by his children Angela (Serge) Abt, Gary (Michelle) Pounder, Donald (Mary Beth) Pounder, 7 grandkids, 4 great-grandkids and many nieces and nephews.
James was a very giving man and we are all very proud to have had him as our Father and Grandfather. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Love you Dad. “Keep your head down, left arm straight and follow through.”
Services will be held Friday, August 29th, 10:30 am at Tahoma National Cemetery 18600 SE 240th ST, Kent WA. Reception to follow.
