John William Carpenter, a beloved teacher, coach, and man of faith, passed away peacefully at his home in Lakeland on April 4, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on February 6, 1943, in Fairmont, West Virginia, John moved to Florida in the 1960s, where he lived a life defined by dedication, humility, and an unwavering commitment to shaping the lives of others.
For more than four decades, John served as a high school math teacher and baseball coach. First in West Palm Beach at Twin Lakes High School and then in Polk County, leaving a lasting impact at both Santa Fe Catholic and All Saints Academy. Known simply as “Coach” to generations of students and athletes, he was respected not only for his deep knowledge of the game and the classroom but also for the character and faith he instilled in those he mentored. His leadership guided his teams to numerous victories, including a state championship in 1995, but his greatest pride was always the young lives he helped shape.
John’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He led with kindness, integrity, and quiet strength, always placing others before himself. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in his community, he served as a role model whose influence extended far beyond wins and grades. A faithful servant, a dedicated educator, and a cherished coach, John William Carpenter will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, former students and faculty, and all whose lives he touched.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Gene Carpenter, and two brothers, Terry Carpenter and Steve Carpenter. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Maxine Loretta Carpenter, and his four children, Joseph Carpenter and wife Shawna, Tammy Tetting and husband Tim, Crystal Bedenbaugh and husband Ryan, and Jerry Carpenter and wife Jorgeanne, and his eight treasured adult grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at City Central Church, 310 Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Lakeland, FL 33803. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, mail to P.O. Box 1971 Lakeland, FL 33802, or give online at westcentralfloridafca.org/donate.
