At age 18 he attended Bethany Lutheran Seminary and then Northwestern Lutheran College at Watertown, Wisconsin and graduated with a B.A. in Pretheology and moved from Minnesota after being called as a pastor to serve Immanuel Lutheran Church in Winter Haven, Florida.
He met and married Emily Janice Kroon in 1963. Together they welcomed four children and were blessed to be able to provide them with a Christian education. Early after being married Emily assisted Richard in teaching a large kindergarten class at Immanuel in addition to Richard being a pastor. Richard later became a public-school teacher for 25 years and after semi-retiring he worked another 25 years at Publix.
"O LORD, You have searched me and known me...... For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well." (Ps. 139:1ff)
He enjoyed playing tennis, fishing, sports, vacationing with his family across the country during long summer breaks visiting national parks and attractions. He enjoyed spending time with his family. His faith in his savior Jesus was always paramount and shared regularly with his devotion to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 64 years. "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward." (Ps. 127:1ff)

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."(2 Tim. 4:7-8)
