

Russell was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and grew up in Troy, New Hampshire, traveling seasonally between Troy, New Hampshire and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In Ft. Lauderdale, at age 4 he met Mary Swisher who would become his wife 18 years later. During his childhood he spent more time reading and studying than playing outdoors, leading to a lifelong love of learning and research.
Russell graduated from University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science, Attended University of Florida then on to Florida State University with Masters of History and Emory University with Masters of Divinity. He went on to be a teacher at Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale FL, and later became an Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, Florida Annual Conference. As a pastor he served at: FUMC in Titusville, Grace UMC in Perry, Trinity UMC in Jacksonville and St. Mark’s UMC in Jacksonville, Kirkman Road UMC in Orlando, FUMC Lake Alfred, and Lena Vista UMC in Auburndale, Eloise Methodist in Eloise, and Polk County Drive-In Church in Winter Haven. Following his retirement from the ministry Russ taught at Polk County Juvenile Boot Camp and was also Polk County Schools substitute
teacher for 10 years.
He and his wife Mary were active members of First United Methodist Church in Auburndale where they volunteered with visitation and serving communion. Additionally Russell served as a Hospice visitation Chaplin for a number of years.
Russell loved studying the bible and history. Throughout his life, he chronicled the history of the Florida Seminole Indians. In recent years, he researched Desoto’s travels through Central Florida. He was, also, a regular contributor to Troy Town Newspaper in his New Hampshire hometown from 2012-2020.
Russ is survived by his children; Charles (& Karrie) Moore and Tim (& Dionna) Moore. He was loved by his grandchildren; James Moore, Kaylee (& Darrell) Price, Kirk Moore, Tiffani Moore, Tabitha Moore, TJ Moore, and Luke Moore. He was a proud great-grandfather of; Kaibella Moore, Kailani Moore, Aaliyah McMath, and Rilee Price.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 25, 2021, followed by a service (1:30 PM) at First United Methodist Church Auburndale, 316 Lake Ariana Blvd, Auburndale, FL 33823. Internment at Glenn Abbey Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum Chapel, 2200 K-Ville Ave, Auburndale, FL 33823.
In lieu of flowers family request donations be made to Youth Program at First United Methodist Church Auburndale, Florida.
