She was born on July 27, 1939 in Augusta, a daughter of the late Alonzo Craig and Myrtle Inglett Owens. She was the second of three children born to them.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo Craig and Myrtle Inglett Owens, her sister, Ann Owens, and her infant brother, Eugene Owens.
She is survived by her son, Roger Gosdin and his wife Wanda Gosdin of Augusta, her daughter, Cheryl Bellardino and her husband Joseph A. Bellardino of Augusta; her grandson, Thomas Forrest McCoy and his wife Alisha of Ft. Riley Kansas, her great-grandson, Yael Forrest McCoy, her close cousin, Ronald Davis Flowers and his wife Jackie of North Augusta, South Carolina, her nieces, Tracy Edwards of Newnan, GA, and Geri Lynn Redfern of Augusta, GA, and countless close friends. She was especially close to Pastor Jim McCollough of Elberton First United Methodist Church who had served at Woodlawn United Methodist Church when she was physically able to attend services. The family is grateful to Pastor Jim, Forrest and Alisha McCoy, and Ronald and Jackie Flowers, as they were with us at her bedside at the time of her passing.
Eugenia was a proud graduate of Aberdeen High School’s Class of 1959 in Aberdeen, North Carolina. Though she lived in Augusta, GA for over 65 years, she considered Aberdeen her home and maintained life-long relationships with her friends from school. She particularly enjoyed opportunities to attend class reunions and tirelessly researched contact information of classmates who had moved away so that they could receive notification of the events.
She married Wayne James Gosdin of LaGrange, GA on April 2nd, 1961 in Charleston, South Carolina. During their seven year marriage they had two children, Roger and Cheryl.
She worked as a crossing guard for the Richmond County School system for many years, something of which she was very proud. She worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union in the late 1950s and also worked at J. B. White department store in Augusta for their semi-annual Moonlight Madness sales.
She was well known for keeping in touch with friends, family, and other church shut-ins. She and Pastor Jim would pray for church members who were on the prayer list, as well as praying for family and friends. She was a devoted Christian with a very strong faith. When she was no longer able to attend church services, she watched services on television and read church materials such as church bulletins and The Upper Room.
She enjoyed playing piano, 50s music – Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price was a particular favorite, dancing, gospel music, singing in the church choir, the Andy Griffith show, Christmas, and cats – can’t forget her cats – she called them all “Baby”.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter. She was very involved in her children’s lives throughout. She never missed a school program, PTA meeting or Awards Day Ceremony, and served as class room mother at her children’s schools, assisting with parties and chaperoning school field trips. She loved her grandson Forrest – she was his “Bobo”, loved him unconditionally, and always wanted the best for him
Because of her kind heart and generous spirit she was very well-loved. She didn’t have much, but she shared what she had with others and her children never did without the most important thing of all – her unconditional love and pride in them. Her influence, her example, and the lessons she taught will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She was a caring person who truly knew how to listen. She always asked how folks were doing, including asking about their children. She gave of her heart and her time to all those she interacted with. If you were her friend, you stayed in her thoughts always.
