Don Ellis Hawkins was born on November 23, 1959, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the third of six children born to Pearlie Hawkins and Elwood Terrell. He grew up surrounded by family and shared a special bond with his siblings: Queen Hull, Bessie (Greg) Buford-Hopkins, Sherry (Brian) McKinney, Lillie Roseburgh, and Iolanthe Patterson. His sister Bessie affectionately greeted him with the nickname “Woody,” a name that stayed close to his heart.
On September 30, 2001, Don married the love of his life, Margette Burton. They were introduced by their daughters, whose friendship had already brought the two families together. Their union was one built on love, laughter, and shared purpose, and they were eagerly planning to celebrate their Silver Anniversary in September of 2026.
Don was a devoted father to Kaja Hawkins, Vanquillus Terrell, Joy Burton, Laquanda Harnet, and the late Curtis Burton. His children will forever remember that he was always there for them—no matter what. He was also a proud grandfather to Demetriac Jennings, Jr., Dez’Mond Jennings, DeKiyah Wilburn, Dynasty Wilburn, Coreon Cline, Noah Brown, Kenneth Jr., Kaneisha, Amanda, and Mariah, along with a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended relatives, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Don had a deep love for fishing, often spending peaceful and joyful hours on the water with his buddies. These fishing trips created lifelong friendships and many treasured memories. Known for his strong personality, his family lovingly described him as “head strong,” a trait that reflected both his determination and his resilience.
After graduating from high school, Don enlisted in the United States Army, where he served courageously as a Platoon Sergeant. During his tour of duty, which included time spent in Germany, Sergeant Hawkins earned several honors and medals, including the Sharpshooter Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, multiple Overseas Service Ribbons, and the Army Service Ribbon. He served his country with pride until receiving an honorable medical discharge.
Following his military service, Don dedicated over a decade of his life working as a groundskeeper for an apartment complex, a position he held for 11 years before retiring in 2021. He was known as a hardworking and dependable man who took pride in everything he did.
Don Ellis Hawkins will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and dedicated family man. His love for fishing, his unwavering strength, and his commitment to those he loved will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of love, service, and perseverance will continue to live on through his family and the many lives he touched.
