

Michael Johnson was born on July 8, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, to his loving parents, Dell Spivey and Ernest Johnson. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the deep love and care of his son, Jason Tate, and his daughter in law, Shannon Leleua Tate.
Michael proudly served his country during his time in the United States military. After completing his service, he went on to build a long and dedicated career with Wal Mart, where he worked until his well earned retirement.
In the 1990s, Michael made Denver, Colorado his home. It was there that he later married Deborah Simmons Johnson, with whom he shared many years of joy, companionship, and unwavering love until her passing in 2019. Their bond remained a cherished part of his life.
Michael was known for his warm spirit and the way he brought people together. He had an undeniable love for cookies of any kind and could always find a reason to fire up the BBQ, gathering family around with good food, stories, and laughter. His favorite time of year was the Fourth of July, when he delighted in spending the evening with his grandchildren, lighting fireworks, and creating memories filled with excitement and joy.
Michael is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Johnson, and his son, Victor Tate Jr.
He is survived by:
• His son Jason Tate (Shannon)
• His daughter in law Laverne Tate (wife of the late Victor Tate)
• His grandchildren:
Donovan (Alexis), Ayanna, Jason Jr., Tanyesha, Alexandria, Monet’, Joe, Jon, Tiana, and Maria
• His great grandchildren: Graydon Tate, with two more great grandchildren on the way
• And a host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and the love he poured into every gathering. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.

A graveside service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, located at 3698 South Sheridan Blvd, Denver, CO, 80238, on February 2, 2026, from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
