After a two minute interview during which he asked me three questions and cracked the far theatre door open about four inches, Mr. Davies gave me the most amazing job I could have ever asked for at the Westdale Theatre.  I started behind the concession stand and evetually worked in the ticket booth as well, but of all the wonderful memories I have of my years at the Westdale the ones that still make me laugh are of Mr. Davies shaking his head at the retreating back of a customer carrying a large buttered popcorn and a Diet Coke. "As if the diet soda is going to save them".

Long after I left the Westdale, I would look for Mr. Davies in the doorway as I passed and I probably always will.

Like Dan, I spent a good chunk of my senior secondary school evenings and weekends working at the Westdale Theatre under the singular stewardship of the man we all called, despite our advancing ages, "Mr. Davies".  As Dan has relayed, the Theatre was a terrific place to work – family like – in many ways, with the relationships formed among a predominantly part-time student staff continuing well beyond one's tenure as an usher or concession stand attendant.  This special staff conviviality was indubitably a product of Mr. Davies personal qualities and management style: at a time when part-time student work generally meant time sheets and micro-management, Mr. Davies extended a trust in his staff's competence and honesty that genuinely made one rise to the occasion.  And, like Dan, there are at least a few excellent expressions that I continue to use as a direct result of Mr. Davies's punchy deployment of them: perhaps most saliently, “that changes the water on the beans, then, doesn't it” followed by an expectant look of shared understanding.  
Even twenty years ago, Mr. Davies was a manager generations removed from his staff in terms of age; but, as Dan relays, the majority of us had an appreciation and respect for him uncommon in employment venues dominated by students.  Even though he was as “old” then as we were “young,” he remained for me something of a canny enigma – a man with a host of interesting life experiences of which we caught occasional glimpses in those moments when he told us stories of his adventures in the navy or when we argued with him and Dan about politics (many of us disagreed with Mr. Davies's political positions as much as Dan concurred with them!).  Mr. Davies was, for me, a “deep” soul who I very much appreciated working for and knowing; and, indeed, when I returned from my own adventures abroad late in 2007 to discover Mr. Davies finally retired from working evenings and weekends at the Westdale Theatre, I absolutely felt the corresponding ‘passing of an age'….
My condolences to Kathleen, with whom I worked so many years, and to those family members of Mr. Davies I never met.

I once had the best job in the world, and it was as an usher, and eventually assistant to the manager at the Westdale Theatre in Hamilton.  In my university days it was a good gig... Great co-workers to have a laugh with, and spend time with, especially Kathleen.  Classic movies to see at least 100 times... "Run Forest run!"...rings through my head to this day.  Mr. Davies didn't watch many of the films shown, but I do know that "A Fish Called Wanda" was one of the few that he loved and he would make sure he caught his favourite scene, before heading to his office to complete his business.  But why I loved working there so much was because of Mr. Davies himself... Even in my 30s, I couldn't bring myself to call him Ken.  I respected him so much... Yet we were friends.  The real reason I loved working at the Westdale theatre was the opportunity I had to spend time with Mr. Davies.  He always found the time to discuss with me the latest political situation, which I always agreed about with him, which made for fun discussions.  Mr. Davies had a very funny wit and sense of humour too!  And he was a gifted observer of human behaviour, from which I have gained untold insights while ripping tickets as he talked in my ear!  At a lot of establishments, there is the motto "the customer is always right".  Mr Davies didn't always follow this ... He wouldn't hesitate to kick out rule-breakers, and whiners and cheaters...he stood by his standards, and I was always proud of him for it!  And the other passion Mr. Davies had was his love of the Toronto Blue Jays...and in those glory days, I had endless fun talking with him about his team... Whom he had the radio set up for each night in his office....One of Mr. Davies' favourite sayings was "he couldn't hit the side of a barn with a handful of rice"...usually speaking of the opposing team, but sometimes, about the Jays themselves.

One thing is for certain, not only can Mr. Davies hit the side of a barn with a handful of rice...he hits a home run with everyone he loves.
