Passed peacefully away at Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre in Toronto in his 94th year, one day after the 63rd anniversary of his wedding to his life’s companion Joan (Hancock). Loving father to daughter Roma and her husband Jeff Burt of Edmonton, son Kevin of Aurora, daughter Brenda (dec) and daughter Lorraine and her late husband Adrian Facca of Aurora. Dear grandfather to Stephen, Louise, Lucas, Lexi and Marcus. He will also be missed by his last surviving sibling - sister Shirley (Ernie Leger) of Oshawa along with many nieces and nephews.
David was a kind, friendly, outgoing man with a unique sense of humour. Always ready to lend a hand, he was a whiz at repairing all things mechanical. David was also an amazing, graceful dancer with few equals at the waltz. David was a veteran of WWII, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was also a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was recently awarded his 70th year pin.
David and Joan spent the majority of their married lives on Canada’s East Coast, residing in Sackville NB, St. John’s NL and Halifax NS where David worked as a service manager for Pitney-Bowes until his retirement in 1986. They moved to Aurora, ON in 2003 to enjoy the company of their family.
David will be cremated and returned to St. John’s where he will join his daughter Brenda in eternal rest.
Many thanks to Dr. David Shergold and the staff of Dorothy Macham House at the Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre. They have been his “other family” for the past 18 months and provided much-appreciated comfort and care throughout his time with them.
If you wish to remember David with a donation, the Veteran’s Centre, the Legion or any other charity of your choice would be grateful for your support.
