(written by the late William Burbage Smyth Trimble)
Dorothy died peacefully in Aurora on Sunday November 16, 2014 at the age of 91 years. The name Dorothy means “Gift from God” and her life fulfilled the promise of her name. Her life was one of love and service. During World War II she was on the staff of the Toronto Branch of the Red Cross Society. She was a member of the Margaret Scott Circle of the Big Sister Association. Her volunteer work included the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Hospital Auxiliary of York Central Hospital, and she was co-founder of HELP, which later became the Vaughan Community Information Service from which CHATS of York Region evolved. In 1975 her husband Bill took a three-year educational assignment in Lesotho, Africa, through the Canadian International Development Agency. While in Lesotho, Dorothy did volunteer work as Field Director for Save The Children Fund, Lesotho, and administered sponsorships for Unitarian Service Committee Canada and Oxfam England. But first and foremost was her devotion to her family – her husband of sixty-three years, the late William Burbage Smyth Trimble; daughters Catherine Rennie Wolfe, Dorothy Virginia Walsh (Frederick Michael Walsh), Margaret Elizabeth Norrie, son Alan Ross Trimble (Andrea Margaret Kirsten Roth); grandchildren Martin Vinton Wolfe (Karen Anne Hislop), Heather Jerrine Wolfe, Thomas Philip Walsh (Elizabeth Chen), Alan Michael Walsh, Mira Anne Grace Trimble, Joshua Mackay, Oliver Mackay, Rebecca Samara Norrie Alton (Eric Leroy Thomas Alton), Hannah Elissa Norrie; and great grandsons Henry John Wolfe, Alexander William Martin Wolfe, Jonah William Wolfe, Frederick William Walsh, Simon Benjamin Alton and Gabriel Nathan Alton. Dorothy was the sister of the late Margaret Jean Carruthers. Dorothy and her family very much appreciated the many kindnesses and care shown to Dorothy by friends and staff of Sunrise Aurora and to Dr. Norman Kalyniuk. Dorothy was a member of Yonge Street Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). She believed that each person is endowed with a touch of divinity and treated everyone accordingly. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Quaker Meeting House, 17030 Yonge Street, Newmarket. Arrangements entrusted to Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora 905 727-5421 L4G 6W8. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Dorothy to The Religious Society of Friends, Yonge Street Meeting, 17030 Yonge Street, Newmarket Ontario L3Y 8V3 or Canadian Friends Service Committee, 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto Ontario M5R 1C7.
