Eric was a proud and dedicated father to Gabriele and Monica (Chris) and a loving, caring Opa to Miles, Aaron, Alyssa, Ava, Julia and Parker & Brock. His family was his pride and joy, and he was always available to help with anything at a moment’s notice.
In 1955, at the age of 17, Eric came to Canada from Germany not speaking a word of English and worked hard to learn a trade and build a very good life for his family. We are ever grateful for his kindness, gentle spirit, guidance, and the work ethic he instilled in both of his daughters. He was always there for us in every way with an unwavering love.
Eric’s hobbies and interests were many; first and foremost was his passion for soccer, both as a longtime player and referee. He was in his element on the soccer pitch, playing for the Richmond Hill Rangers, Aurora Hearts and Aurora United. We so loved to watch him play and ref. He was Treasurer and then President of the Richmond Hill Minor Soccer Association and in turn was honoured by the town for his contributions to the community at a special celebration for the 1988 Olympics, where he held the Olympic flame. He was also recognized for his frequent & humanitarian blood donations. He loved listening to all genres of music and could be heard singing and whistling throughout the house or dancing at the many parties he threw. He enjoyed gardening and his beautiful flowers were admired by all. He loved the outdoors and especially camping. He was happiest by the lake, teaching us to fish & swim & always soaking in the warmth of the sun. He travelled the world and shared many great trips with his partner Maureen, who brought much joy to his life and lovingly cared for him during his illness. His affection for his dogs was evident as he took them everywhere he went whether it be in his bicycle basket, or to watch him referee under the shade of a tree. He was drawn to children and babies, lighting up when he saw them. He read the newspaper daily keeping up with all the world events.
He was ever present at our children’s sporting events or dance/music recitals as their proud Opa and even volunteered as a big brother. Our Papa was an exceptional cook and his potato salad was requested at every family gathering he so loved to attend. He was cool and funny and corny all at the same time.
Predeceased by his parents and his brothers Arthur and Jimmy, he is survived by his loving sister Erika and his brother Peter. He is now resting with his beloved Mama. ❤️ Ruhe sanft alle.
We will love and cherish our loving Papa and Opa always.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Donations in Eric’s honour, may be made to any of the charities he generously supported: Heart & Stroke Foundation & SickKids Hospital or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
