James (Jimmy) grew up in King Township along with his siblings Robin, John, and Tim. His parents, John and Susan raised the boys in the country where he acquired a strong work ethic helping with the many chores and duties required on the family hobby farm. Jimmy and his brothers would also enjoy endless days playing hockey on the pond and for the local Rep. teams in Aurora. In the summer months, Jimmy spent time up at the family cottage on Thunder Beach where he made many wonderful friends and memories which included Head Counsellor for the children’s summer camp program. He was an avid tennis player, winning a number of TBA and school tournaments over the years.
Jimmy would later attend high school at St. Andrew’s College, in Aurora. He thrived at school participating in the many extracurricular activities and sports teams. Some of his accomplishments included: Best Cadet, Day Boy Prefect, Best Director - Drama and Goalie for many of the SAC and Rep hockey teams over the years. Jimmy would later graduate from McMaster University, with Honours in Economics. His post-graduation began with a year-long exploratory trip back-packing across Australia and New Zealand. When he returned, he entered the hospitality industry where he eventually invested in a number of successful restaurants in Aurora and King, Ontario.
Anyone who knew Jimmy immediately recognized his very special gift of love and energy! He lit up every room he walked into and being in his presence was always a joy as he made everyone around him feel incredibly special. Jimmy also had a terrific sense of humour which added another layer to his already enduring personality. His mother Susan would often refer to him as “A Ray of Sunshine”. He truly was one of a kind and we can still hear him say in his boisterous way “Jimmy loves ya”!
Jimmy is survived by his loving mother Susan Barton, his brothers Robin (Paula), John (Debbie) and Tim (Kelly). He was adored by his nieces and nephews Katie, Samantha, Molly, Alex, Johnny, Colin & Olivia who referred to him as the “FUNcle”. He is predeceased by his father John, who sadly passed away in September of 2022.
He will also be missed by all the many patrons of TJ’s in Aurora, where he knew everyone’s name and made them feel at home. He organized numerous charity fundraisers, sports pools, and events such as the Annual St. Patrick’s Day party.
