John Duguid was born in East York, Ontario, on September 26, 1940. He was the beloved husband of Lynnie Duguid (Galbraith) and a devoted father to Jodie A. Hobbs (David) and John C. Duguid (Candace). He was a proud grandfather to Shannon, Amber, Taylor and Cody — each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. John was also a great-grandfather to Zachary and to soon-to-be-born Callum. And these words wouldn’t be complete, without recognizing Johnnie’s furry feline friend, Harvey.
A pioneering figure in the flooring industry and founder of C.J. Duguid Flooring (Ontario) Limited, he passed away peacefully at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy marked by strength, leadership, and steadfast responsibility.
Known for his strong work ethic, unwavering support for those he loved, and his no-nonsense honesty, John left a lasting mark on both his industry and his community. Through Duguid Flooring, he introduced innovative products, raised the standard for craftsmanship, and was instrumental in ensuring that workers received proper training. His collaboration with unions helped forge a rare balance—one where both company and employee could succeed together.
John didn’t just build a business; he built people up. He supported not only his own family but also the family of his beloved wife, Lynnie, always offering his time, resources, and guidance. He could be frank but those who knew him understood that his words came from a deep desire to help, to push people toward their best.
John’s legacy lives on in the lives he impacted, the careers he shaped, and the values he passed down. He will be deeply missed by Lynnie, his family, friends, and countless others who benefited from his generosity and leadership.
Details regarding a celebration of life will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in John’s memory. Or simply take a moment to help someone in need—just as John would have done.
