Shirley loved when Marcus came to entertain the residents at Chartwell Aurora! They are related by marriage and Shirley would occasionally see Marcus at family gatherings over the years. So she was delighted when he started singing at special events at Chartwell Aurora and she would always request her favourite song “Green Green Grass of Home” and Marcus always obliged. So Marcus graciously recorded this for Shirley - one last time! 💕 Thank you Marcus!

Dear Mrs. Cook, 
I know that sounds formal for a cherished friend I have known and loved my whole life, but I never could bring myself to call you Shirley.  We always thought of you like family and a second mom. I have so many great memories growing up living beside you and your wonderful family.  Whether it was coming to your house at lunch for our standard Kraft Dinner,  or watching you swat away the Millers at night on the front walk. I never did find out why you called the moths  Millers!  Another favorite memory is listening to you tell your famous jokes....like John Smith from Boston and the "I know it" horse joke and I always laughed when you told Mr. Cook to "Stop circling the airport" when he was telling one of his elaborate stories. 
You always made mom and I feel like royalty when you introduced us to the staff and your many friends at Resthaven.  
When I told my niece Keri about your passing, she remembered serving the lovely lady with so much class at mom and dad's Grey Cup parties when she was a little girl and being in awe of you.  
We all were.

Shirley was such a warm, enthusiastic person.  Thinking of her, I see her beaming smile and those beautiful kind blue eyes.  How fitting that she was a member of the welcoming committee and received a volunteerism award for being a good neighbour to new residents. Over the many years of our friendship we have been privileged to be called "honorary members" of the Cook family.  In some ways that would make Shirley our Mom, but the reality is that with her youthful spirit and her zest for life, Shirl was more like a sister.  
With her red hair always perfectly coiffed, Shirley was a woman of grace, charm, wit and kindness, who always saw the good in people.

Grandma Shirl, you have always been a very special friend to me, and I have lots of memories of our times together.  When I was a little girl you would come to my school in Brantford every Parents Day and tell me how great I was doing.
When I got older you always wanted to know what I was ùp to, and no matter what it was, you would tell me that I was smarter than you, because you couldn't do those things.  I know you really could, but you just wanted to make me feel proud of myself.
I love you Grandma Shirl, and I'll talk to you every night when I go to bed.

Dear Aunt Shirley 
I can’t believe you are not with us anymore.
I know you are looking down  on all of us.
Shari Lu and I were very fortunate to have spent 4 1/2 hours with you, Aunt Betty and Aunt Marie on October 13 all together in your room.  We had many laughs and talking about the days back in Melancthon .
Your outgoing personality and beautiful smile were very heart warming.

Mom - We knew this day would come when you would no longer be with us. We’re sad that you’re not here but know you will be in our hearts forever.
We’ll miss our daily FaceTime calls, seeing your face light up when we came on the screen, especially Leia (the dog). Even though we just chatted about the weather, the Jays, shared a joke, or what we had for dinner (mashed potatoes for you!!), those conversations were a big part of our day.
We had some great travels together. We always enjoyed your take on new experiences. Like the English Channel Tunnel. There you are under the sign that says “photography strictly forbidden” saying “Take my picture Betty, this is the engineering marvel of the 20th century!”
I want to thank you Mom for showing me how to be a good mother. You always showed patience and loved us unconditionally. OK you occasionally pulled the “Wait till your father gets home” line to get us to behave but with 5 kids, dogs and cats running around, you’re entitled to that one.
There’s a space in our hearts now that you’re gone but we’ll fill it with the many cherished memories we have, guaranteed to always bring a smile.

My sincere sympathies to the entire family.  A. Shirley was one of the most wittiest ladies I have met and always had a smile on a face when both Wayne & I visited her.  I loved her hugs as well.

A wish come true for a Blue Jays "Super Fan".

Grandma Cook was always a nice person.  She had good vibes with everyone around her.  She was there when I was born thirty years ago and I always felt comforted even just talking to her about our days together.  Grandma was always full of joy when she saw me and my brother.  Though I will miss talking to her, I will take heart knowing that we had good times and she was happy up to her last moments.  Love you always, Grandma.
