

Alfred Morris died in his home at Westminster Manor Friday evening March 4, 2005. Born in Winnsboro, Texas December 29, 1915, Alf influenced and touched many lives as a Scholar, Educator, Army Officer, Church Deacon, Business Owner, Friend, Husband and Father. Graduating from Winnsboro High School in 1932, Alf initially studied pre-med at UT, but his love for literature and writing led him to earn a Bachelor's Degree in 1936 and a Masters Degree in 1938, both from UT in English Literature. In 1939 Alf entered Yale to seek a PhD, but soon decided to head to California and taught High School English in San Luis Obispo. Entering the Army in 1942 as a Private, Alf rose to the rank of Major, Adjutant General's Department before being honorably discharged in 1946 and returning to California. In the early 50's Alf co-owned The Oxford Bookstore in Santa Barbara with long-time friend, Colonel William Blackshear. However, in 1955 Alf chose to return home to Texas, meeting and marrying the one true love of his life, Thelma Porter, on Christmas Day, 1957. After teaching English in Pearsall, Commerce and Cleburne Texas, Alf worked as an English Teacher and High School Guidance Counselor at Lanier, Crockett and Travis High Schools in Austin from 1963 till retiring at the age of 73 in 1988. He is survived by one son, Benjamin Alfred Morris of Austin, sister-in-law, Emily Glover of Austin, nephew, Dr. James Muse and wife, Tina, of Tyler, nephew David Glover of Houston, niece Carolyn Glover Jakovich and husband, Derek, of Austin. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Craigie Morris of Winnsboro; sister, Margaret Muse of Tyler, brother, Dr. Craig Morris of Augusta, Maine; and his wife of 42 years, Thelma. Mr. Morris will lie in state from Thursday thru Sunday morning, with formal visitation on Thursday, March 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday March 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin. Services for Alfred Morris will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday March 13th at Highland Park Baptist Church in Austin.
