

Alice Marie Schlortt Young of Upton, TX, died April 14, 2022, in Austin, TX. She was born October 7, 1929, in Upton, TX. She graduated from Smithville High School and Southwest State Teachers College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, with hours for second and third majors in Math and English, and a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught elementary school in Smithville and Aldine ISDs and at the junior college level, but spent most of her career teaching algebra at Lanier Junior High School in Houston. She married Clark Hutton Young on July 13, 1957, in Houston and was happily married for almost 36 years until Clark’s death. She later enjoyed a second marriage to Tony Wenzel and they spent 14 years together, until his death in 2014.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Schlortt, her brothers, R.E. (Bob) Schlortt and Quinn Schlortt and her sister, Annie Schlortt Smith. She was also predeceased by her sister-in-law, Minnie Schlortt and her brothers-in-law, Bill Young and Glenn Smith. She is survived by her daughters, to whom she taught algebra, and her sons-in-law, to whom she did not, Becky and Laban Marsh of Houston, Margaret and Matt Woodruff of Houston and Catherine and Mark Snider of Upton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Elizabeth Woodruff Yancy (Will) of San Antonio, Will Woodruff of Columbus, Ali Marsh of Chicago, Abigail Jackson (fiancé Ben Stallmann) of Midland, Sam Marsh of Austin, great grandson Charles Hutton Yancy of San Antonio and numerous other family members. Alice had a very full life.
She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Gamma Chapter), Daughters of the American Revolution (Thomas Shelton Chapter), College Women’s Club (Houston), En Amie Review Club of Houston, Houston Area Retired Teachers Assn., Docent – Harris County Heritage Society, Heights Lions Club and Grace United Methodist Church – Houston Heights, where she was actively involved in Grace’s unit of the United Methodist Women. In her retirement, she gave many book reviews and was an avid bridge player.
The Family would like to thank Debbie Braun Dotson, Shannon Delvalle and Jennifer Durrett for their care that made it possible for Mom to continue to live at home for the last several years. They were truly gifts to all of our lives. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff of St. David’s – South Medical Center, especially those on the third floor, who filled her final days with care and compassion. Finally, thanks to the entire staff of Hospice Austin who were so helpful and caring as we felt our way through the last few days.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the Young School House Bible Church and Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the funeral service at 11 am with burial immediately following. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 25,2022, at 7 pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 1245 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church – Houston Heights, Young School House Bible Church, Hospice Austin or the charity of your choice.
