She was part of five-generations of the Champion Family who have worshiped at University Methodist Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married, as were her children.
Juanita earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Education at the University of Texas, Austin. She worked at University Methodist Church, the Texas Education Agency, the Austin Independent School District, teaching English at Fullmore Jr. High, and the Eanes Independent school District. The late Dr. Edmund Heinsohn, a beloved minister of University Methodist Church, referred to Juanita as a most competent and devoted church secretary. As an Austin school teacher, she was enthusiastic and effective with boys and girls, and had a high regard for the social worth of teaching. She renewed her teaching certificate and became a beloved aide to special resources at Westlake HS.
Juanita's primary career, which she enjoyed most, was that of homemaker and mother. To every facet of her children's development, she devoted her best efforts, her support, and her enthusiasm. For fourteen years, she taught in the church school. She worked tirelessly with the scouting programs and sought opportunities for parental involvement in school-related activities. She found time to enjoy membership in various organizations – Austin Woman's Club, PEO, English Speaking Union, Wednesday Morning Music Club, and DAR. Having played violin with the University of Texas Symphony during her student days, her most delightful activity during her retirement was performing with the Silver Strings Ensemble. She spent her senior years with her sister Josie at Westminster Manor.
The family thanks the Westminster staff for their excellent loving care.
She lived by a set of principles from which she never deviated. Juanita was indebted to her ancestors for a legacy of 1ove, honor, and integrity - a legacy which she sought to perpetuate.
Visitation will be held from12:00PM to 1:00PM on Sunday, November 7, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. with services following at 1:00PM. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
