

Andrew Grant Smith Andrew Grant Smith, 88, entered into rest on February 10, 2004 at South Austin Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A native of San Francisco, Grant was born on May 17, 1915. He attended Polytechnic High School where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Evelyn Anne Mills. They were married on April 13, 1940 and shared their lives for 48 years. During this time, Grant pursued a sales career in office supplies for H.S. Crocker Co, Inc.retiring in 1980 after 46 years with the company. Much of his selling success was attributed to his likeable personality and commitment to satisfying his customers. Grant served his country during World War II in the United States Army. During the Battle of Buna, he was wounded in action and eventually recovered from both malaria and his injury. Upon his honorable discharge in 1943, he received the Purple Heart, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, and the American Theatre of War Ribbon. As an active participant, Grant was a life member of San Francisco Lodge 139 Free and Accepted Masons of California, California Bodies Scottish Rite, Asiya Shriners of San Mateo, California, and Temple AAONMS Legion of Honor. He valued the many friendships he developed and enjoyed the social and civic activities of each organization. At the age of 82, Grant moved from San Francisco to Austin to be closer to family and lived at The Summit at Westlake Hills for the last six years. He adjusted well to his home away from homeplaying pool with his buddies, participating in council meetings and social functions, and attending exercise classes. Even though he accepted his naturalized Texan status, he steadfastly kept his sports allegiance to his favorite Bay Area teamsThe University of California at Berkeley (Go Bears!), the San Francisco Giants (Go Giants!), and the San Francisco 49ers (Go Niners!). Grant is survived by his son, Ken Smith, and wife, June, of Wilkes-Barre, PA; daughter, Debra Smith, and husband, Fred Brinkley, of Austin; granddaughter, Kmbris Bond and husband, Kendal, of Eugene, Oregon; and granddaughters Tara Elyssa Rapp-Smith and Jessica Ann Rapp-Smith of McVeytown, PA. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 48 years, Evelyn Anne, and his daughter, Edith Ellen Bell. Those who remain behind and who miss him most are grateful for how Grant touched their lives. He will be remembered for his many giftshis outgoing and energetic spirit, his generosity and thoughtfulness, his unwavering work ethic, his principle mindedness, his loyal friendship, and his unconditional love for family and country. To remember Grant, his family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A Funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.
