Arline Joy (Garrett) Gravely, age 99, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, at her residence in The Pavilion at Great Hills in Austin, Texas.
Arline was born on February 14, 1926 in Salem,Virginia to Frank and Nora (Hogan) Garrett. She began her early adulthood working at various office jobs. Early in her marriage, she transitioned to being a full-time homemaker. Once her sons were at an independent age, she returned to the workforce, and after a few short years landed at Darden Restaurants based in Orlando, Florida, where she stayed until her retirement, a twenty-year stint.
Besides her professional life, Arline was fond of gardening, and prided herself on her roses, gardenias and camelias, and went so far as to become a member of the Orlando Garden Club. Arline was a dedicated member of the Lutheran Church until her later years and the onset of Alzheimer’s. When she was active, she volunteered at her home church, where she supported church staff. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. In addition, her favorite pastime was golf, and she played well into her retirement, particularly while living in Florida.
With her husband’s job, she lived in Virginia, Baltimore, Maryland, Orlando, Florida, Las Cruces, New Mexico, back to Florida and then settled in Austin, Texas in 2001 to be near her family. After moving to Austin, Arline became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Arline was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and sister; her husband, Chester Gravely, and two of her sons, Michael Gravely and David Gravely. She is survived by her other sons, Steven Gravely (and wife Carolyn Gravely) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Kirk Gravely (and wife Judy Gravely) of Endicott, New York; her grandchildren, Evan Gravely, William Gravely, and Sara Gravely, all of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of The Pavilion at Great Hills and to the loving caregivers from Silverado Hospice.
