Bernie was a 1964 graduate of Martin High School. He served in the United States Air Force. He received his degree from Sam Houston State University and later retired from the Travis County Adult Probation Office.
Bernie will be remembered as a kind and gentle person. Many people thought of him as a mentor and most importantly, as a friend. Bernie always had a great big smile on his face. He always had a story to tell and was very knowledgeable in all areas. Bernie was an active member of the South Austin Lions Little League Club for many years. He served on the Board of the Travis County Credit Union, a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Anthony de Marie Claret Catholic Church in Kyle, Texas.
Bernie was preceded in death by his mother, Natalia Arreguin and brother, David Ruiz.
He is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; son, Larry Gonzales and wife, Delisa; daughter, Yvette Escobar and husband, Roddie; sister, Magdalena Bazan and husband, Joe; brother, Enrique Arreguin; sisters-in-law, Rose Lopez, Vera Cervantes and husband, Alvino, Ester Bazan, Lucy Alvarez and husband, Raymond, and Julie Bazan; brothers-in-law, Marcos, Tony, and Joe S. Bernie was a brave and strong fighter but now he is at peace and free of pain. Thanks be to God who gives us our reward. He was much beloved by many and will be missed. Bernie firmly believed that death is not the ending of anything, death is just the door opening to the next chapter.
