Bernadette Louise Barry Young, known as Dusty by many of her friends, passed peacefully from this world to heaven on December 16, 2014, after a long battle with complications from breast cancer chemo. Bernadette was born March 31, 1951 in San Antonio to Jeanette L. Mann and Alfred P. Barry Sr. She grew up in San Antonio attending all girl Catholic schools until convincing her mother to let her go to public school her Junior year and graduated from Winston Churchill High School in 1969. She entered Southwest Texas State University that fall where she met her life partner on a blind date the first week of school. She married John Young February 6, 1971, in San Antonio. They moved to Waco later that year and she completed her education, graduating from Baylor University in 1973. While living in Robinson, near Waco, they welcomed son, Barry McCord Young and daughter, Amanda Jeanette Evelyn Young into the family. They moved to Manchaca in 1982.
Her professional career was as varied as her personal interests, from insurance analyst to IRS tax examiner to professional belly dancer. Dusty loved music and dancing and was as comfortable performing an intricate bellydance as two-steppin' at Club 21. She was an animal lover, especially her horse Rustler and her numerous kitties. She loved to travel; her favorite was to the Galapagos Islands.
Above all though, she loved her family and her faith. Barry and Amanda were most precious to her. When they were little she sang to them every night. She made costumes, helped sell Girl Scout cookies, took them to piano and dance lessons, got 4H goats out of the fence and gave an FFA calf a shot. Her faith sustained her during her struggles. She was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church for over 30 years and was active in several ministries before her illness.
Bernadette is survived by her husband, John Young; son, Barry Young, of Manchaca; daughter, Amanda Young of Austin, Amanda devoted 3 ½ years to helping her Dad care for her Mom so she could stay at home as long as possible and Barry helped also; mother, Jeanette Barry; sister, Susie Patanaude; brothers, Alfred Barry Jr., Stephen Barry, and Michael Barry; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws also mourn her passing.
