Betty was born on November 10, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, where she was raised and attended Immaculata Academy in Hamburg, graduating from high school surrounded by the close-knit community she loved. In 1958, she married the love of her life, David J. Lips, and together they built a life filled with family, laughter, and adventure while raising their four children: Debbie, Michael, Steven, and Robert.
In 1968, Betty and Dave moved to Frankenmuth, Michigan, where she devoted herself to raising her children and creating a warm and welcoming home. Known for her incredible cooking and baking, Betty eventually turned her talents into a business, founding Speciality Kitchens, a catering company that quickly became known for her delicious food and warm hospitality.
After several successful years, Betty began a new chapter as a real estate agent with Koester Realtors, where she built a highly successful career. She had a natural ability to connect with people and loved helping families find the home of their dreams.
In 2002, Betty and Dave moved to The Woodlands, Texas, to be closer to family. There, she once again built a thriving real estate career—first with Better Homes and Gardens Gary Greene, where in addition to caring for her clients, she also trained new agents. She then joined RE/MAX of The Woodlands, earning numerous honors including 11 RE/MAX 100% Club Awards, two Platinum Club Awards, an Executive Club Team Award, and recognition for her 15-year anniversary with RE/MAX. Betty took great pride in helping families begin new chapters in their lives, often welcoming them with a thoughtful gift and some of her famous homemade baked goods. Her son Steven joined her business and took it over when she retired.
Betty approached life with enthusiasm and joy. She loved the water, animals, gardening, and spending time outdoors. As a child she enjoyed ballet and horseback riding, reflecting her family’s involvement in the harness racing business. Throughout her life she remained active—jogging, walking, lifting weights, and always striving to stay healthy and strong.
Her grandson, Kian, was the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with him. Betty also adored her beloved dog, Bandit, who became her constant companion after the passing of her husband. He was always by her side, bringing her constant comfort and joy.
Betty loved to dance, explore new restaurants (always trying to figure out the secret behind each recipe), and spend time with friends and family. In 2019, she moved to Austin, Texas, to be closer to her children, Debbie and Robert. She settled in a community in Round Rock, where she built her own home and quickly became an active and beloved member of the neighborhood. Betty formed many close friendships and was known for her vibrant personality, impeccable style, and always looking her best.
During the holidays, Betty delighted in sharing her traditions with others, including her famous Christmas whiskey cake, which she lovingly baked each year for the people who managed her community.
Betty will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit. She was truly the light of every gathering, and people were naturally drawn to her kindness, laughter, and positive outlook on life. Everyone loved attending any event Betty hosted. She was a wonderful entertainer and took great pride in her home and welcoming guests.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David J. Lips, in 2017, and her son, Steven Lips, in 2023.
She is survived by her children Debbie (Jim), Michael, and Robert (Natalie); her beloved grandson Kian; her sister, Margaret Mary Smith; and many friends and extended family members who will cherish her memory.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 2:00 PM CST at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704.
