Brent Douglas Bates passed away on November 12, 2024, in his studio in Buda, Texas. Brent grew up in San Antonio and attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. He graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in photography. Brent did commercial photography, including real estate photography, receiving several awards.
Brent retired from his independent commercial photography business, splitting his time between Texas and his mountain home in Colorado. His passions were photography, traveling, music, and racing. Brent enjoyed the outdoors, especially the beautiful mountains of Colorado. He also loved playing golf, hiking, fishing, riding his ATV, and taking photographs along the way. His favorite activity was driving race cars with his longtime friend, Harv at the Harris Hill Raceway.
Brent lived a spontaneous and adventurous life. He loved to travel and meet new people, making friends everywhere he went. He attended as many concerts as he could, inviting friends to join him whenever possible. Brent also had a caring and giving heart. He supported food banks in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado, local animal shelters, several firefighter associations, and the random homeless person he never knew. Brent was dedicated to caring for his mother's dog, Buddy, who recently passed away after a long and happy life.
Brent is preceded in death by his father, Billy Joe Bates, his mother, Ida Gaye Bates, and his sister, Brenda Gaye King. Brent is survived by his brother-in-law, Wayne King, and nieces, Kristen (& Greg) Gutierrez; Stephanie (& Spencer) Funkhouser; and Lauren King, along with his lifelong friends and adopted family Roy and Beverly Albrecht and their children Madison, Zachary and McKenna.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio where Brent attended in his youth. A lunch will be served immediately following the memorial service for any friends and family to enjoy.
