

C. Thomas Camp, 63, of Austin, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at his home after a hard fought battle with leukemia. Tom was a faculty member of Austin Community College, having served in state government for many years. He was also a member of the Vestry at St. Davids Episcopal Church. Tom was born April 15, 1943, in Texarkana, Texas, to Horace and Mary Camp. After high school in Texarkana, he graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor of science degree in comparative studies and a masters degree, summa cum laude, in English and psychology. After serving on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati, he earned a doctoral teaching fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Tom ventured away from teaching, moving to Austin, and in 1970 he joined Southwest Educational Development Laboratory. In 1975, Tom began a long career in state government as administrator of the Texas Health Facilities Commission. Later he accepted a position with Charter Medical Corp. as executive director of development/medical programs, then returned to state government to serve as executive director of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. He joined the Texas Department of Health in 1995, serving the commissioner of health in various roles, as director of Public Health Managed Care and Childrens Health Insurance Projects, as bureau chief of Medicaid Managed Care: Health Care Financing, and as bureau chief of Health Professions and Facility Licensing and Compliance. He also was a visiting lecturer at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin. He retired from state government as administrative officer for the Texas Aircraft Pooling Board and continued his teaching career as an adjunct professor of communications at Austin Community College. Tom served as past president of the Woodlands Homeowners Association. Other affiliations included serving on the Curriculum & Programs and Communications Task Force Committees at Austin Community College, and on the Executive Council and as Treasurer of the American Association of Dental Administrators. Married Dec. 27, 1975, Tom is survived by his wife, Linda. Survivors also include his son, Taylor, and wife, Bonnie Blue, of Santa Monica, CA; daughter, Erin Harp, and grandchildren, Andrew and Alexandra Harp, of Shreveport, LA; brother, John and wife, Lorraine, and their children, John Tyler, Matthew, David, and Sarah, of Austin; and mother-in-law, Margorie Bogusch, of Austin; and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at St. Davids Episcopal Church, 304 E. 7th, Austin, on Wednesday, January 31, at 11 a.m., officiated by The Rev. David Boyd and The Rev. Chad Vaughn. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin. Pallbearers will be William Bogusch, Jr., Charles Bogusch, Paul Bogusch, John Tyler Camp, Matthew Camp, and David Camp.
