Growing up in Austin, Carl attended Casis Elementary School the very first year it opened, then attended O.Henry Junior High and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1962. Carl earned a B.A. in European History from the University of Texas and a M.A. in Medieval History at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Carl was a lifelong member of St. Austin Catholic Church.
Among his many interests, Carl became an accomplished genealogist. He crisscrossed the United States talking with relatives to acquire more knowledge of his family. He wrote letters to churches all over Europe to obtain birth and death records, and in some cases, visited European cities and small towns where relatives had lived. Carl was a member of The Sons of the American Revolution, The Society of Colonial Wars, The Society of the Ark and the Dove, and The Sons of the Republic of Texas. Carl was a Fifth generation Texan and the great grandson and direct descendant of John Archibald McIver, who was the first man to enroll at Texas A & M.
Carl loved books from an early age and reading about far away places fueled his passion for travel. He was fortunate to have been able to travel all over the world as a young man to places that now no longer exist, as they did then. Carl’s command of history made the fascinating stories he recounted of the places he had seen come to life! He was a true gentleman and scholar. He will be dearly missed.
Carl is predeceased by his parents and younger brother, Douglas Anthony, who died as an infant. He is survived by his sister, Ann, of Austin.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 13th at 1:00 P.M. at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin Texas 78731. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Austin Speech Labs, 7800 Shoal Creek Blvd., Suite 136-S, Austin, Texas 78757, austinspeechlabs.org or The Settlement Home for Children, settlementhome.org
