Carlene was born on July 22, 1939 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from Incarnate Word Academy. She lived in the Corpus Christi area for 84 years before moving to Cedar Park in 2023. She was a resident of the Enclave at Cedar Park where she formed many friendships. Carlene was a faithful member of the Catholic community at the Enclave.
Carlene’s main occupation was as a proofreader for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. She spent many years immersed in the news and afterward never could get away from it. She read newspapers, magazines and books, and she watched CNN religiously. She collected many books over her life and studied writers and writing. She loved bookstores and libraries and visited them whenever she could.
She was also fascinated with travel. Her destinations included the Holy Land, Egypt, and many cities in Europe. Her favorites were London and Rome. In Rome, she met Pope John Paul II. She visited a sister in Washington, D.C. many times and spent days roaming the Smithsonian Museums and the government buildings. She dreamed of living in a big city where she could walk to see the cultural highlights on a daily basis, but she never realized that dream.
Carlene overcame a life-long struggle with deafness and she was very proud of the fact that she was one of the early adopters of cochlear implant technology. Her implant opened up her life in many ways. She lost her hearing before age seven and was profoundly deaf. She compensated with hearing aids and lip reading, but the implant allowed her to hear much more.
Carlene was the oldest of five children born to Carl and Gladys Neuman. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Jackie Smith and Nancy Neuman. She is survived by her sister Celeste (Milton) Menn of La Porte, Texas and her brother Grover (Laurie) Neuman of Austin, and by eight nieces and nephews, all of whom were able to see her in her final days.
A Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin. Carlene’s remains will be interred in a family plot at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi.
