

Carthon P. Phillips, Lt. Col. USAF Ret., age 96, passed away on April 20, 2016 in San Antonio, TX. "CP" or "Phil" Phillips was born April 17, 1920 in Vera Texas to Albert Frank & Kate Phillips. He grew up near Farwell, TX, and attended Texas Tech University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps immediately prior to World War II. He served in the Pacific theater with the 7th and 19th Bomb Groups in Java, Australia, and New Guinea. He returned stateside to complete officer and pilot training in Douglas, AZ in 1944, and flew B-17 bombers for the remainder of the war. In late 1948 he met Doris Eileen Wallace, and married her in early 1949. Lt. Col. Phillips flew missions worldwide in the Military Airlift Command – MAC, mostly in four engine aircraft such as C-124s. He remained in the Air Corps/Air Force earning degrees from University of Maryland and Memphis State University along the way, until retiring in 1967 as Deputy Base Commander of Hunter AFB Georgia.
After military retirement, he lived and worked in Austin for many years as a Disability Examiner for the State of Texas. Carthon was a member of the Air Force Association, Quiet Birdmen, and Daedalians. He enjoyed hunting whitetail deer and pheasant, and deep sea fishing for King Mackerel & Dolphin from his boat in the Gulf of Mexico.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty years, Doris Eileen Phillips, brothers A.F. "Bunk" and Glenn Phillips, and sister Elaine Phillips Petersen.
He is survived by his brother Charlie "Sugartime" Phillips, daughter Mary Kennedy, sons Trace and Todd Phillips, and grandson Nicholas Phillips.
A memorial service will be held in Austin, TX at Weed Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, at 2:30 pm on May 8th, 2016. http://www.wcfish.com/location/weed-corley-fish-north/
Graveside service and burial with honors will be in San Antonio, TX at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:15 pm on May 9th, 2016.
