Cary Heroy of Austin moved forward with supreme grace on June 9th. Daughter of Tom and Barbara Holmsley, Cary was born in Muenschweiler, Germany. She grew up in Austin, Laredo, and McAllen. She starred for the Sharyland High School track team, and also played basketball and volleyball. Not surprisingly, she was voted most athletic girl of her 1983 graduating class.
Following one year at Principia College in Illinois where she set a school record in the 200m, Cary completed her Bachelors of Science degree in Education at UT Austin in 1987. She coached volleyball and basketball at Hays Middle School in Buda, along with teaching science for six years. For the next six years, she worked at State Farm carrying a ladder, climbing on roofs, and crawling under foundations as a claims adjuster. But her favorite job was next – being a full time mom and volunteer. She was an active member of the Christian Science church from childhood, serving on many committees. She established a vacation Bible school at First Church of Christ, Scientist and led the school for 8 years. Cary was room mom and active in PTA in both elementary and middle school for both of her daughters.
Cary also loved to go camping with her family at some of the beautiful state parks in Texas and national parks around the country.
She is succeeded by her parents Tom and Barbara, husband Ken, daughters Kenna and Cara, and brothers Tom and Timothy.
There will be a celebration of Cary’s life on Saturday, June 18th at 5:00 pm at Cook Walden, 6100 N. Lamar, Austin, TX 78752. The family will receive friends before the celebration starting at 4:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1309 Guadalupe, Austin, TX 78701; Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, 1901 North Akard St, Dallas, TX 75201; or World Wildlife Fund, 1250 24th St. NW, Washington DC, 20037.
