Our beloved family matriarch, Celestine Thompson, peacefully answered God’s call home on Friday, August 30, 2024, at the remarkable age of 93. Known affectionately as “Big Mama” or “Mama Tump,” she was the seventh of seven children born to Garland Alexander and Mary Alter-Reed in Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; daughter, Ruby Edwards; and her great-grandson, Christopher.
Celestine accepted Christ at an early age. She enjoyed a fulfilling career at The Texas School for the Deaf and Blind where she worked in the food service department for many years. She was also self-employed.
Celestine was cherished for her loving and caring nature. She had a unique way of making people laugh and was a steadfast source of wisdom, offering stern yet gentle love to those who sought her advice. She always went out of her way to make sure you felt welcomed.
Celestine had a great passion for shooting pool, dancing, and listening to real soul music. She also had a passion for cooking as well.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories to her loving daughter, Willie Mae Alexander; two grandchildren, Karen and Ralph Alexander; 6 great-grandchildren, Coy Gentry, William Gentry, Richard Jones, Diamondnique Dean, Quinton Alexander, and Monicia Archie; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Also, her very near and dear best friend, Ms. Betty Ussery.
Celestine’s warm presence and infectious spirit will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
