CW was born to Clarence William Hetherly Sr. and Valla Hetherly in Lampasas Texas on July 15, 1938. During his youth he was most proud to earn the highest and most distinguished rank of Eagle Scout with 3 Palms and the Order of The Arrow. It was no doubt the Scouts experience formed the man he was to become throughout his life. Soon after graduation from Lampasas High School in 1956, he adventured out with friends to Idaho and joined the U.S. Forest Service as a Fire Jumper. Upon his return, he enrolled in the University of Texas, entered the real estate business and married Wanda Millsap on Dec 28th, 1957. CW was the proud father of two sons, Mark & Mike.
Mr. Hetherly was a home builder in Austin and Central Texas for 34 years. He initially partnered with Sidney Darden (Darden & Hetherly) and later on his own ran Hetherly Homes. His professional leadership in the community started early. He was a member of the Austin Association of Homebuilders and served as President. In addition, he was Area IV Vice President of the Texas Association of Homebuilders and a member of the National Homebuilders Association. In February of 1980, CW was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Texas Housing Agency by the Governor.
Undoubtedly his many years on the Board of Governors for St. David’s Health Care System was the most important position he held in his long legacy of service to the Austin Community.
CW was impactful and influential as the St. David’s Healthcare Partnership Chairman. He led a team of directors and executives who were responsible for the negotiation of the alliance between St. David’s and HCA that formed the St. David’s Health Care System which is now one of the largest healthcare providers in the State of Texas. CW was also St. David’s Foundation Chairman, and a member of the St David’s Board of Trustees.
There was never a moment of downtime for CW. His service continued not only on the Board of Directors for First City National Bank, City of Austin Planning Commission, Travis School for the Blind and the City of Austin Electric Utility Commission. He somehow found time to serve the neighborhood youth as coach, Commissioner and President of Northwest Little League and Northwest Pony & Colt Leagues. CW was an avid sports fan and enjoyed supporting his sons in high school and throughout their college years.
Lampasas provided a respite from CW’s work routine with hunting trips in the fall and always a football game on the TV.
Rockport, Texas became another place of relaxation for CW and his family; he always had a fish story or two to enhance the conversation. CW loved to sit on the porch listening to his favorite country western songs, watching the pool bubble with young children and glancing over the calming waters of Aransas Bay. As was his generous nature, his slice of paradise was shared with family and many friends over the years.
CW was active socially in the community as well. He belonged to the Austin Country Club where on many occasions Wanda would chauffer Mark and Mike and their friends to the golf course and swimming pools. Many fine dinners with friends were enjoyed at the Headliners Club and the Tarry House.
CW’s professional successes were from his self-made drive and intelligence. But he will be remembered as a generous husband, father, grandfather, friend and colleague.
CW was preceded in death by his brother Clyde Hetherly and son Mark Hetherly. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Wanda Hetherly, sister Judy Hetherly, son Mike and his wife Natalie, daughter in law Paula Hetherly Barton and her husband Rick, his four grandchildren, Kristen Stephens and her husband Andrew, Blake Hetherly, Jake Hetherly, Brandon Hetherly and great granddaughter Piper Stephens.
Services will be at Weed Corley Fish located at 5416 Parkcrest Dr, Austin, TX 78731 on Saturday, November 12th at 10:00 AM.
A private burial will follow in Lampasas Texas at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to St. David’s Foundation, 1303 San Antonio St. Suite 500, Austin Texas 78701.
