He was born January 10, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Clayton and Loretta Cheever II. Clayton graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1944, after which he worked for the United States Post Office. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1945 and served in the United States Army Air Forces and United States Air Force for 27 years. Clayton had assignments in Texas, Germany, and the Panama Canal Zone before retiring in 1972 from the Pentagon as a Chief Master Sergeant. He was awarded multiple Air Force Commendation Medals and the Meritorious Service Medal. After retirement from the military, he returned to the United States Postal Service and retired in 1990. Clayton was active in the Austin Retired Chiefs Society and served 30 years as the Secretary/Treasurer.
Clayton believed service was the epitome of a man’s life. In the military he served his country, in the Postal Service he served his community, in the organizations he joined, he served his peers, and above all he served his friends and family. He was a man happy with his lot in life, lived to honorable standards, uncomplicated by life’s aversions, did without for others, gave advise only when asked, had a “have you heard the one about?” to brighten the days of others, and above all could be counted on without exception.
Clayton waits to meet in eternity the only girl in the world for him, his wife of 65 years, Valeria F. Cheever and a grateful son, Clayton E. Cheever IV. His sister, Alice Carpenter; his Sister-In-Law, Henrietta Smrkovsky; and nephew, Johnnie Maroul with his wife Becky also survive him. In addition to his parents, his daughter, Marilyn Ann Cheever, preceded him in death.
Services and internment with full military honors will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 2 P.M.
