

Danny Burger 1931 2004 Danny Burger, age 72, a native and longtime resident of Austin, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 in Austin. The eldest child of Mary and Toney Burger, an admired sports family of Austin, was born August 23, 1931 at old Seton Infirmary. He began his early education at Sacred Heart School in Muenster, where his father began a successful coaching career in Texas. In 1939, his father joined the teaching and coaching staff of the Austin ISD, and Danny continued his early education at downtown St. Marys Academy, St. Ignatius and Fulmore Middle School in South, Austin, and the old downtown Allan Jr. High School. He graduated from Austin High School in 1949, and was active in school functions, serving several terms as class officer, elected president of the Student Council, and lettered in basketball and baseball. Danny worked part-time at the American National Bank to finance his higher education at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated in 1953, named to the Deans List for academic standards, with a degree and advanced studies in educational administration. Danny remained with the bank to pursue a career in banking and finance. He subsequently accepted a position with the Municipal Advisory Council, an association of banks and securities dealers active in the Texas municipal bond market. In 1963, Danny joined the investment department of American National Insurance Company, Galveston, to administer its portfolio of governmental securities. He returned to Austin in 1968 to accept the appointment as Development Fund Manager of the Texas Water Development Board, a state agency that provides funds to local governments for water and sewer projects. During his tenure with the agency, Danny overviewed the financing for numerous regional water and sewer projects serving multiple cities and municipalities. He expressed personal satisfaction with his involvement in providing funding for the planning, construction, completion or ancillary financing for such major Texas reservoir projects including, Toledo Bend (Texas Louisiana), Lake Cypress Springs (Mount Vernon), Lake Texana (Edna), Millers Creek (Munday), Lake Conroe (Conroe), Lake Bob Sandlin (Mount Pleasant), Lake Greenbelt (Clarendon), Lake Palestine (Tyler), Choke Canyon (Three Rivers), Mackenzie Lake (Silverton), and White River Lake (Spur). In 1976, Danny returned to the Municipal Advisory Council as its Executive director, a position held until his retirement in 1993. Like his father, he involved himself in local sports, as a coach and official for Austins youth city league and church sponsored programs of basketball and baseball. In his professional career, he was a frequent speaker on the subject of governmental accounting and finance. He was an active member of the Austin Club, serving on its Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and held the offices of Vice President and President. Danny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Burger; sister, Helene Stewart; brother-in-law, Colonel Arthur Stewart; daughter, Kathryn Burger; son, David Burger and his wife Pam; daughter, Anne Burger Entrekin and her husband Mark; daughter, Patricia Burger ONeal; son, Kim McBride and his wife Jacque; daughter, Kay Wray and her husband Jim; grandchildren, Sarah Burger, Lauren ONeal, Cameron ONeal, Michael McBride, Ethan Burger Entrekin, and William Entrekin. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel.
