Born on June 18, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas, to Josephine and Arlos Jones, David grew up alongside his brother Perry, forming bonds that would carry through a lifetime.
David moved to Austin in 1974, where he planted roots and built a life defined by hard work, perseverance, and love. He founded his own business, Dash Expeditors, and devoted himself fully to it—not just as a career, but as a way to provide for the people he loved most.
He was first married to Betsey Weishaar, with whom he had a son, Michael. In 1989, he married Ann Dunlap, who survives him after 36 joyful and unwavering years of marriage. Together they raised two sons, Tyler and Scott. He was especially overjoyed to know his new grandson, Ellis Robert Jones - son to Tyler and his wife Georgia.
To those who knew him, David was a provider in the truest sense. He worked tirelessly, always with the aim of ensuring his family felt supported, protected, and cared for. His strength of character, dedication, and quiet generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
David had a lifelong love of sports—watching, playing, and especially coaching. As the proud father of three boys, he poured his energy into being present and involved, from the sidelines of Little League games to early-morning practices and Scout outings. Whether it was baseball, football, or anything his sons took an interest in, David was there—encouraging, cheering, and teaching life lessons through every play. He cherished taking Ann to University of Texas baseball games, a shared tradition they both looked forward to.
Outside of work and family, David found joy in the simple pleasures of life: visiting dog parks, setting sail on open waters, casting a line while fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. Two of his favorite places were the sandy beaches of Port Aransas and the cottage on the St. Clair River in Michigan, where he found peace, adventure, and connection to the natural world. Over the years, he shared his love of animals with some of his best pals through life —Maggie, Buster, Sydney, and Gracie—each of whom brought him companionship, loyalty, and joy.
David’s legacy lives on in the love of his wife Ann, his sons Michael, Tyler, and Scott, and the many friends and family whose lives he touched with his warmth, humor, and unwavering spirit.
A celebration of David’s life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite animal shelter or organization.
